Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson Shows How Easy It Is to Pull Off a Gray Beard

Going gray happens to almost every guy out there—and that includes Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. But with his beard, he proves you can do so with dignity.

Over the summer Johnson discussed his new facial hair in an Instagram post and gave a little insight to his followers. “Yeah, I know you very well,” he said. “Right now, you’re looking, you’re like, ‘Damn, DJ, look at that beard, okay.’ It’s for Skyscraper, I’m growing this out.” And it doesn’t look like he’s completely shaved it off since then.

Even facial hair experts think he’s pulling it off. “The main thing The Rock is doing right is maintaining his beard and keeping it trimmed while still keeping it natural in color and shape,” says barber Kirk Riley, co-founder of Otis & Finn in New York. “The combination of natural color and shaping suits him much better than if he had the beard lined up.”

While growing a beard might seem like a piece of cake, there are a few key steps to making it look as good as Johnson’s. “The Rock has a unique beard,” Riley says. “It’s two-toned salt and pepper and is the luck of the draw based on his genetics and age. My advice would be to keep the sideburn and cheek of your beard tight (The Rock’s are white) and let your barber know you want to keep the goatee a little darker and thicker, if possible.” Riley adds that every guy’s beard will differ, so you’ll want to discuss your options with your barber.Don’t worry about making the trek into a barbershop every time either. Always focus on keeping the neck and above your lips cleaned up, whether you’re going with a shorter or longer length. And if you’re still on the fence about growing out your beard because you’re concerned about the gray, don’t sweat it. Riley says you should “rock it (pun intended) with confidence and don’t waste your time coloring your beard.”
