Celebrities On Their Periods

It’s not rocket science, but rather basic science, that most women will ge their periods each month. But despite periods happening to half of the population regularly, they can be treated as a taboo topic in public.

Luckily, certain celebrities don’t play by the (outdated) rules and have opened up about their experiences with Aunt Flo. Here are some of our favorite moments from celebs who aren’t afraid to keep it real when it comes to discussing menstruation.

In an Instagram video posted by Kendall Jenner, Gigi opened up about her boobs during her cycle. “My boobs are small right now. They get really big when it’s, like, that time of the month,” she said, as Kendall nodded along and every woman thought “SAME.”

In early March, Janelle laid down some serious schooling on people who get freaked out by the idea of periods. It all started when she tweeted, “Menstrual Period Blood. #WomensHistoryMonth.” She followed that up a few minutes later with “It’s sad that there are prob folks more grossed out by and/or ashamed of menstrual period blood than they are the current administration.” Then, she added, “Never forget girls & women birthed the human race and hold the power to unbirth it. Y’all gone learn. #WomensHistoryMonth.” People kept posting things about how that grossed them out, so she went on the offensive and targeted specific haters with things like this:

#YES.

The writer-actress wrote an essay addressed to teens in Tavi Gevinson’s Rookie: Yearbook Two that specifically touched on periods. “Your bodies develop so much faster now. Thanks to genetic modification and hormone injections, the meat that’s around now is basically making you all into Marvel Comics mutants. You get your periods at what, like 8? You have double-D boobs at 9? How cool is that?” she wrote. “I started menstruating in ninth grade. I spent all of eighth grade faking that I had my period, down to sticking Kotex in my underwear in case anyone needed proof.”

Demi told StyleWatch that her family “embarrassed me so bad” after she told them she had gotten her first period. “My sister folded a poster board in half and made a card out of it and drew pictures, and it said, ‘Happy Period Day!’ She drew stick figures and kisses, and she used red markers,” she says. “I have a pretty good sense of humor, so on one hand, I was totally embarrassed, and on the other, I thought it was awesome.”

If you’re female, famous, and of child-bearing age, you’re probably going to have to deal with pregnancy speculation at some point. Katy did—and shut it down in the most amazing way possible:

Lily opened about period stigma in a 2014 interview with Rolling Stone. Among other things, Lily said she would have liked to have seen her song “Sheezus” as a single, “but it’s not up-tempo enough. It’s also got the word ‘period’ in it, which is really offensive to people, even though half the world has to deal with it once a month… .” Lily later called her song “groundbreaking” for its period reference adding, “I’m proud of that. It’s f*cking awesome.”
