Picking out a sunscreen you feel good about putting on your skin is one thing. But finding one that you feel good about putting on kiddos? So. Freaking. Hard.
Luckily, there are formulas that are safe—and that don’t feel greasy, cause itchiness, or sting the eyes. Dermatologist Joshua Zeichner, MD, says your best bet is a mineral sunscreen that contains zinc oxide alone or has zinc oxide paired with titanium dioxide.
“Mineral UV blockers do not tend to cause skin irritation and are a milder option for children,” Dr. Zeichner says, adding that you should steer clear of chemical-based formulations that have avobenzone. The nine picks below all fit the bill as great sunscreens for kids and babies.
(One note: With infants under six months, Dr. Zeichner advises skipping SPF altogether, as it can lead to irritation. Instead, opt to shield their delicate skin with sun-protective clothing, blankets, and umbrellas.)
