The 4-7-8 Method Could Help You Sleep

Are you having difficulty getting to sleep? You are not alone. Insomnia is a growing problem, with an estimated 30-50% of people suffering from sleep disturbances at some point in their lives. Fortunately, there is a simple method you can try to help you get the rest you need—the 4-7-8 method.

The 4-7-8 method was developed by Harvard-trained physician Dr. Andrew Weil. It is a breathing technique that is said to help you relax and drift off to sleep in as little as 60 seconds. According to Dr. Weil, the 4-7-8 method works by calming the mind and body, allowing you to reach a deeper state of relaxation and thus, a more restful sleep.

To practice the 4-7-8 method, start by sitting with your back straight and your feet on the floor. Place the tip of your tongue against the ridge of tissue in the back of your upper front teeth and keep it there throughout the exercise. Now, inhale deeply through your nose for a count of four. Then, hold your breath for a count of seven. Finally, exhale through your mouth for a count of eight. Repeat this pattern four times.

The 4-7-8 method is a simple technique that can be practiced anywhere, anytime. It is a great way to relax and lull yourself into a restful sleep. Try it for yourself and see if it helps you get the rest you need.
